How to compress a PDF

  1. Step 1: Select or drop your PDF.

  2. Step 2: Choose a compression level.

  3. Step 3: Click Compress PDF.

  4. Step 4: Download the smaller file.

Smaller files, fewer headaches

Email services, online forms and portals often reject attachments that are too big. Compressing a PDF helps it get through, uploads faster and takes up less storage.

The recommended level suits most documents. Choose light compression when print quality matters, or extreme when the smallest possible size is the priority.

How does PDF compression work?

Images are downsampled to a resolution that suits the level you pick and re-encoded as optimized JPEG, uncompressed data streams are packed, and the file structure is rewritten more compactly. Masks and transparency are preserved, and images that could change appearance are left untouched.

Image-heavy and scanned PDFs shrink the most; text-only documents are already compact and shrink less. If compression would make the file bigger, you get your original back unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Which compression level should I choose?

Recommended gives a good balance for most files. Light keeps images near print quality, while extreme produces the smallest file but images will look noticeably softer.

Why didn't my file get much smaller?

PDFs that are mostly text, or that were already optimized, have little left to remove. If the result would be larger, we return your original file unchanged.

Will the text become blurry?

No. Compression mainly affects images. Text and vector graphics stay sharp at every level.

What happens to my PDF after compression?

The original upload is deleted immediately. The compressed version remains downloadable for 30 minutes before it is deleted automatically, or you can remove it yourself right away.
