Documents that stay readable

Courts, public administrations, universities and many companies ask for PDF/A when documents must be kept for years. The format forbids anything that depends on outside resources, so the file looks the same no matter which software opens it later.

If you're unsure which level to pick, PDF/A-2b is widely accepted and supports modern features such as transparency.

How is the PDF/A file created?

Your PDF is rewritten with Ghostscript: fonts are embedded, an sRGB output intent is added so colors are defined, and transparency is flattened where the chosen level requires it.

The output follows the PDF/A structure, but strict validators such as veraPDF may still flag files that start from unusual or malformed sources. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked before conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Which PDF/A level should I choose?

PDF/A-2b is the best default. Choose PDF/A-1b if a system requires the oldest, most compatible version, or PDF/A-3b if you need a format that allows embedded files.

Will my file pass a PDF/A validator?

Most files do. Some unusual source files may still produce warnings in strict validators such as veraPDF; repairing the PDF first can help.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

No. PDF/A doesn't allow encryption, so remove the password with Unlock PDF first.

Are my documents stored?

No. The upload is deleted right after conversion, and the PDF/A file is removed automatically after 30 minutes. You can also delete it immediately.
