Make a document's status obvious

A watermark tells readers at a glance that a document is a draft, a sample, confidential or belongs to your organization. It discourages casual copying and prevents drafts from being mistaken for final versions.

Keep it subtle with a light gray diagonal, or make it stand out with a strong red label at the top of each page.

How does adding a watermark work?

Your watermark is drawn on every page with the position, size and opacity you choose. Text watermarks are added as vector text, so they stay sharp at any zoom level and barely increase file size. Image watermarks are embedded once and reused on every page.

Watermark text can be up to 80 characters in Latin script (accented letters included, Vietnamese too), Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or Hindi (Devanagari); emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean aren’t supported yet. Images can be PNG or JPG up to 5 MB; a PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest result.

Frequently asked questions

Can a watermark be removed?

Yes, someone with PDF editing software could remove it, so a watermark is a deterrent rather than real protection. To restrict who can open the file, also use Protect PDF.

Which characters can I use?

Up to 80 characters in Latin script (accents and Vietnamese included), Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or Hindi (Devanagari), plus numbers and punctuation. Emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean aren't supported yet.

Can I use an image or logo as a watermark?

Yes. Choose Image, then pick a PNG or JPG up to 5 MB. A PNG with a transparent background blends in best. Color applies to text watermarks only.

Is my PDF stored after watermarking?

Your original is deleted once the watermark is applied. The watermarked copy stays downloadable for 30 minutes and is then deleted automatically.
